The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
